1)    From ABC news, I am Daria Albinger.  The Pentagon sent a team of healthcare professionals to Idaho, where vaccination rates are low and COVID-19 cases are skyrocketing.  Shawn Rayne is chief of Ada County Paramedics, says they are getting over a hundred calls a day; “I feel they’re are working harder than they’ve ever worked before.  You know, they are seeing more patients on a daily basis.  They’re working harder.” 

President Biden will outline a six-pronged plan to combat the delta variant in his speech to the nation tomorrow.

2)    A Florida judge deals a setback to Governor Ron DeSantis’s ban on school mask mandates. “A judge in Leon County said Wednesday that Florida cannot enforce its ban on mask mandates, while an appeals court sorts out challenges to the law.  Circuit Court Judge John C. Cooper said that there is overwhelming evidence before him that wearing masks does provide protection against COVID-19 for kids in crowded schools especially, since there’s no vaccine available for kids under 12.  This means the mask mandate provision is on hold as the case works its way through the courts.  It could make its way all the way to the state’s supreme court.  Mark Remillard, ABC News.”

3)    Eleven more deaths in Louisiana bring the death toll from Hurricane Ida and its remnants to 82 in 8 states. 

Tropical storm warnings are in effect for part of the Florida Panhandle with Mindy expected to bring heavy rain and gusty wind to the region tonight. 

4)    The White House isn’t stopping evacuation flights from leaving Afghanistan, but it’s preventing some planes from landing on US bases.  “The US says there’s a problem with some Americans still in Afghanistan.  They may be on planes with Afghans who are not allowed on US bases when they land.  ‘How to keep people on our military bases safe, while also getting these US citizens, dual citizens, people who are prepared to leave Afghanistan, are able to leave.’  Spokesperson Jen Psaki saying the US will only allow properly vetted people to land the US bases.  Andy Field, ABC News, Washington.”

“Stocks finished lower as investors continued to worry over the elevated number of COVID-19 cases and uncertainty over when the Federal Reserve will begin to dial back monetary support.  The Dow falling 69 points, the Nasdaq down 88, S&P 500 down 6.

6-2)  And shares of meme sensation stock GameStop fell in the extended session after the videogame retailer reported second quarter results that beat revenue estimates, but fell short on earnings.  GameStop also announced that it has entered into a lease of a new 500 square foot fulfilment center in Reno, Nevada, as well as a lease of a new customer care center in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

6-3)  And Wingstop will be adding thighs to its menu, following the success of the launch of its virtual brand Thighstop, which will still be made available on its delivery platform DoorDash.

1)      From ABC news, I am Daria Albinger.  A chapter in the nation’s opioid crisis has been closed.    A pharmaceutical giant, many say, with the center of it, has learned today that its $10 billion bankruptcy reorganization plan has been approved; “With the judge’s approval, Purdue Pharma will cease to exist; its asserts transferred to a new public benefit cooperation that’s task with combatting in opioids epidemic.  The company’s been accused of accelerating through aggressive and misleading marketing of Oxycontin.  The plan includes a contribution of roughly $4.5 billion from members of the Sackler families, even though they have denied wrong-doing or liability in exchange their immune from opioids lawsuits and admit no wrong-doing in a crisis that has afflicted hundreds of thousands of Americans.  Aaron Katersky, ABC News, New York.”

2)       The Louisiana is beginning to recover from Hurricane Ida.  “We start to see the lights come back on, in some places.”  Governor John Bel Edwards says more than 11,000 homes and businesses had power restored today, but a million in Louisiana and Mississippi are still without power.  Edwards also says gas and diesel are in short supply. 

3)       Praise for US service members who helped evacuate more than 120,000 people from Afghanistan over the last two weeks.  “The Pentagon’s saying that even though the troops are out, the challenge isn’t over; ‘Continue our counter terrorism efforts, continue our military efforts to protect the American people for the next 20 years’; Joint Chief of Staff Chairman General Mark Milley saying the US is able and ready to attack terror groups inside Afghanistan by air.  Andy Field, ABC News, Washington.”

4)       A student is dead and another is on the run after a school shooting in Mount Tabor, North Carolina.  Winston-Salem Police say the suspect has not yet been apprehended.  It was the second school shooting this week in the state.

5)            Stocks closed mixed, the Dow down slightly, the S&P 500 unchanged, and the Nasdaq at a new high.  You’re listening to ABC News.

6-1)   I am Charles Payne, and this is the Fox Business report.

“Stocks kicking off the first day of trading of the month, mixed on weaker than expected private payrolls data, but the Nasdaq notched a new record close its 33rd for the year.  The Dow falling 48 points, the Nasdaq up 50, S&P 500 up a point.  The private sector added 374,000 jobs in August, well below estimates.  The broader jobs report from the Labor Department comes out on Friday.

6-2)    And Amazon stock finished slightly higher.  The e-commerce giant said it’s looking to hire about 55,000 people globally among its corporate and technology ranks including 40,000 in the US during a recruiting event this month.  Amazon is continuing a hiring spree that began at the start of the pandemic.

6-3)    And shares of Workhorse tumbled 7%, following news that financial regulators have opened an investigation into the electric delivery truck company.

ABC NEWS   AUGUST 26, 2021

 

1)      From ABC news, I am Daria Albinger.  Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the US military may be set to leave Afghanistan next Tuesday, but his department’s work will continue if anyone’s left behind; “There is no deadline on our work to help any remaining American citizens who decided they want to leave to do so --- along with many Afghans who have stood by us over these many years and want to leave and have been unable to do so.”  He said today about 4500 US citizens have been evacuated since August 14^th, about a thousand remain.  ABC’s Karen Travers pressing White House press secretary Jen Psaki for a date on the last flight of evacuees; “You guys have been very good at giving data of the day on these numbers.  Is there going to be one of those updates that you will say and that is it, that’s the last evacuation?”  “I am sure we will make clear to all of you when it is the last flight absolutely.”

   The Pentagon confirming an overnight helicopter mission which rescued several Americans trapped behind Taliban lines.  It was the third such mission in a week.

 

2)            More than six years in prison for one of the Michigan militia members charged in a plot to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Ty Garbin pleaded guilty, saying he was angry about COVID-19 restrictions.

 

3)           The latest surge of infections is hitting children hard.  The virus claiming the life of a child under the age of 5 in one stage.  “Dr. Paul Byers with the Mississippi Department of Public Health, says it’s not the state’s first death of a child due to COVID-19.  ‘This does make a sixth pediatric that has been documented due to covid.’  He says covid cases among kids have been rising due to the delta variant and with that, comes increases in severe cases; ‘We have seen some increases in the number of pediatric admissions.’  The state’s most recent report had seven kinds in the ICU and three on ventilators.  Mark Remilard, ABC News.”

 

4)             Johnson & Johnson says a second booster of its one dose covid vaccine appears to produce rapid and robust antibodies.  You’re listening to ABC News.

“Stocks finished higher with the Nasdaq and S&P 500 booking back-to-back all-time highs as investors await to hear from Federal Reverse policymakers during their annual symposium which kicks off tomorrow.  The Dow rising 39 points, the Nasdaq up 22, S&P 500 up 10 for its 51^st record close of the year.

5-2)   After the closing bell, Salesforce delivered earnings, revenue and forward guidance going past Wall Street estimates.  Shares in the cloud-based customer relationship management company are spiking in the extended session.

5-3)   Also Ulta Beauty’s earnings and revenue beat analysts’ forecast as customers returned to its stores to buy its products.  Ulta Beauty says sales rose roughly 60% in the latest quarter compared to a year earlier.  The Beauty retailer also raised its four-year guidance and outlook and its shares are jumping after hours.

1)      From ABC news, I am Daria Albinger.  “The chaos was unavoidable”; that’s from President Biden sitting down with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos for his first interview since the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban.  The president also standing by his decision to end the US military mission there; “We’ve all seen the pictures.  We’ve seen those hundreds of people packed into the C-17.  We’ve seen Afghans falling.  That was four days ago, five days ago.”  “What did you think when you first saw those pictures?”  “’(What) I thought was we have to gain control of this.  We have to move this more quickly.  We have to move in a way in which we can take control of that airport, and we did.”  You can hear more of this exclusive interview on ABC’s ‘World News Tonight’ and tomorrow on ‘Good Morning, America.’

     The nation’s top military leaders explained how US troops will help evacuate Americans and certain Afghan citizens.  “Once Americans and Afghans get to the airport, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the US can protect them, but ‘We don’t have the capability to go out and collect up large numbers of people.’  Secretary Austin saying he only has enough troops to secure the airport and run evacuation missions, and they are relying on the Taliban to let those Americans through.  Andy Field, ABC News, Washington.”

2)           The White House are outlining its latest COVID-19 vaccine mandates.  Employees at nursing homes which receive federal funding like Medicaid or Medicare must now get the shots.  “I’m mindful that my authority at federal government is limited.  I’m going to continue to look for ways to keep people safe and increase vaccination rates.”  The president also says his administration will be ready to go with third COVID-19 booster shots as soon as the FDA and the CDC approve them.

3)            Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is expected to sign an ordinance which will require all city employees to be vaccinated by October 5^th.

“Investors see a sea of red on Wall Street.  The Dow closing down 282 points, the S&P

500 lost 32, and Nasdaq gave up 138.  

5-2)   A surge of COVID-19 cases left the retail sector reeling(wearing).  The Commerce Department says retail sales dropped 1.1% last month compared to June. 

5-3)   Oil prices weakening for a fourth session Tuesday as OPEC nations and their allies showed no signs of ramping up production.  Four sources tell Reuters the cartel believes oil markets don’t need more crude than they plan to release in the coming month. 

5-4)   About a quarter of the 30 companies in the Dow Jones industrial average are mandating vaccine for their workers.  Barron’s reports Disney, Salesforce, Walgreens and Microsoft are among the big businesses requiring some or all employees in their offices to get shots.  Apple is not mandating vaccines, but it’s requesting workers disclose the vaccination status.

1) From ABC News, I’m Brian Clark. A major question since coronavirus vaccination began is whether people would need boosters. The FDA now appears poised to sign off on a vaccine booster for some people. This ABC’s Mark Remillard explains. “A senior government official familiar with the plan confirms ABC News that the FDA is expected to authorize a booster shot for immunocompromised Americans tomorrow. This announcement is expected to come ahead of the meeting by the CDC’s vaccine advisory committee on Friday, which would make a recommendation to the CDC and the director would sign off on it. Many manufacturers like Pfizer and Moderna have been testing booster shots, but the federal government has so far held off on recommending them.” A state health official in Mississippi says they requested the military hospital ship from the federal government. California will be the first state to mandate COVID-19 vaccination for all staff in public schools. Those who do not get vaccinated will be subjected to weekly testing, says Governor Gavin Newsom. “This is a sustainable way to keeping our schools open.

2) The Biden Administration says recent gains by the Taliban in Afghanistan are not changing the plan to have all U.S. troops out of the country by September. Today the Lieutenant Governor of New York Kathy Hochul who will replace the outgoing Andrew Cuomo after his resignation comes official told reporters she was not aware of allegations in inappropriate conduct against the governor. She says she is prepared to soon in the office. “I am standing right here. At the end of my term whenever it ends, no one allowed to describe my administration toxic work environment.” Hochul will take office on August 24 as the first woman to serve as Governor of New York.

3) Record closes today on Wall Street. The Dow and the S&P 500 stocks notched higher after inflation numbers in July would not as high as the levels from June. You’re listening to ABC News.

Stocks finished mixed. The Dow and S&P 500 notching new record closes after data showed that inflation lost still running hot moderated in July. The Dow rising 220 points, the Nasdaq down 23, S&P 500 up 11. // And McDonald’s announced that all of the company’s U.S. corporate workers must be fully vaccinated by September the 27th as the company imposed new rules mid-rising COVID-19 cases. The burger giant also postponed the officially reopening date of headquarters and other United States offices to October the 11th from September the 7th. // And Comcast NBC Universal will also be requiring that all of the U.S. employees coming back to the office be fully vaccinated. The company also postponing to return to office date. // And the New York stock exchange will require the traders be vaccinated by September the 13th to access its trading floor.
