AFN NEWS ON THE HOUR
Thursday, January 25, 2018

1)  AP Radio News: I am Ed Donahue. Rachael Denhollander was the first to speak up about Larry Nassar. Today the former sports doctor was sentenced in Michigan to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexually assaulting women and girls who went to him for medical attention. “Here’s not a lot that we can do ordinarily at this point whether he thinks his work is hard or not.” Denhollander was one of the more than 150 victims who speak at his sentencing. Larry Nassar got a chance to speak as well. “Your words these past several days, your words, your words have had a significant emotional effect on myself and shaken me to my core. I also recognize that what I am feeling pales in comparison to the pain, trauma, and emotional destruction that all of you are feeling.” Nassar worked at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics. Michigan lawmakers voted overwhelmingly today for a nonbinding House resolution that seeks to removal of the Michigan State University President over allegations the school missed chances to stop Larry Nassar.
2) There was a juvenile hearing in Kentucky for the teenager accused of the deadly shooting at high school in western Kentucky. Two people were killed. Prosecutor Jason Darnall says they want to move this out of juvenile court. “We will be filing paperwork to classify this defendant as what’s called a youthful offender, and that is the process to charge him as an adult.”
3) President Trump criticized mayors who passed up a White House meeting over his crackdown on so-called sanctuary cities. “The mayors who choose to boycott this event have put the needs of criminally illegal immigrants over law-abiding Americans, but let me tell you the vast majority of people showed up.” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu did not show up.
4) Wall Street at the close; the Dow Jones Industrial finished up 41 points. This is AP Radio News.                                    …………………………………………..

Marine with 3rd Marine Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment participated in an endurance course at the Jungle Warfare Training Center in Okinawa, Japan, January 15th. The course tests 3-3 Marine’s will, stamina and ability to work together as a team in a jungle environment ensuring they’re prepared for crisis response and theater security operations in the Indo-Asia-Pacific Region. Also in the Corps, Marines with 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group conducted a tactical fuel system training exercise at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, January 14th. The exercise was designed to enhance the Marine’s proficiency by operating the fuel system in a deployed field environment. 1)  AP Radio News: I am Ed Donahue. House Speaker Paul Ryan says he is optimistic they will pass a spending bill. “We are doing fine.” “We have confidence we will pass it.” The deadline to pass the budget bill is midnight tomorrow. President Trump doesn’t think Democrats want this to happen. “The Democrats want to see a shutdown to get off the subject, because this subject is now working well. The tax cuts and the tax reform have not been working well for the Democrats.” A vote in the House is expected tonight to avoid the possible government shutdown.
2) David and Louise Turpin are due in a California court soon to face charges torturing their 13 children. District Attorney Mike Hestrin says their abuse started with rope. “One victim at one point was tied up and hogtied, and then when that victim was able to escape the rope, these defendants eventually began using chains and padlocks.” Hestrin says the 17-year old who alerted the authorities has been planning this for two years. “She escaped through a window and took one of her siblings with her, but sibling eventually turned back, became frightened and turned back, back into the house.” The victims in California ranged in age from 2 to 29 and all were malnourished.
3) The police chief in Phoenix thinks the man accused of killing his parents is suspected of seven other murders. “Nine deaths, three weeks, nine people shot in our communities in Avondale, Glendale and Phoenix.” The suspect has been identified as convicted felon Cleophus Cooksey.
4) Severe cold in New Orleans has burst water pipes. There’s a boiled water order. Mayor Mitch Landrieu is asking people in New Orleans to conserve water. “We are urging residents in order to help us to limit water uses throughout a day, to the necessities only.” At least 15 deaths across the south are blamed on the cold weather in the region. This is AP Radio News.
